Aadhaar card not compulsory for the Passport Application but Accepted as the proof of Address and Identity. In the month of January, 2013 the Ministry of External affairs (MEA), has announced that the Aadhaar card will be now be accepted as proof of address and identity for passport application in all over India. The Ministry of External affairs has decided and also give advised to the all Passport Issuing Authorities to accept Aadhaar card as a Proof of Address and Photo Identity in conjunction with any other prescribed documents for proof of address/identity for the purpose of passport application. The Ministry can consider documents like voter ID card or electoral photo identity card (EPIC), ration card, PAN, driving licence, birth certificate and etc. but Aadhaar card is not compulsory for the passport and it is just a document if you don’t have Aadhaar card you can any of other proof of identity and proof of address in the application of the passport.

And recent update is that Aadhaar card is not compulsory for the availing services like opening bank accounts, admission in school and obtaining passport. The Planning Minister also said that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory to avail government services like opening basic/bank accounts, admissions in schools, obtaining passport etc by any of individual. It means that one can use Aadhaar card as a supporting document in the passport but it is not compulsory to submit Aadhaar card with the passport application. So now Aadhaar card is accepted as the proof of address and also as a proof of identity in the passport office but it is not compulsory for the application of the passport.

Proof of Address – for applying passport

You are required to submit atleast 1 of the documents listed below.

1Water Bill
2Telephone (landline or post paid mobile bill)
3Electricity bill
4One year statement (with transactions)/ Passbook of running bank account (Scheduled Commercial bank excluding Regional Rural banks and local area banks)
5Income Tax Assessment Order
6Election Commission Photo ID card
7Proof of Gas Connection
8Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
9Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page including family details), (provided the applicant’s present address matches the address mentioned in the spouses passport)
10Applicant’s current and valid ration card
11Parent’s passport copy, in case of minors(First and last page)
12Aadhaar Card
